If you're a sucker for sweet treats and nostalgia, these are all the spots you need to hit!

If you're a sucker for sweet treats and nostalgia, these are all the spots you need to hit!

There’s something about very charming about an old bakery that no prim-and-proper, new-age patisserie can quite replicate. Maybe it’s the faint smell of butter and sugar that remains permanently absorbed into the walls. Or perhaps, it’s the glass display cases lined with pineapple pastries, cream rolls, house-made chocolates, and biscuits stacked in tall jars.

Or it could be the knowledge that generations of people stood in the same spot, and ate what you are eating today. There’s beauty in the idea that some of Delhi’s most beloved joints have stood in the same spots for decades. They are a piece of history that lives with us as part of the city’s identity.

Much before artisanal sourdough and hyper-aesthetic desserts became what draws us into places, these neighbourhood nooks were the locals’ go-to. They’ve survived it all: quick-paced food trends, rising rents, and the city’s constant reinvention. Yet, somehow, their rusks still taste exactly like they did when you first dunked them into a cup of your mother’s chai as a child. Birthdays were incomplete without their frosted cakes. Winter meant freshly cooked plum cake. And evenings meant piping hot chicken patties wrapped in butter paper.

What makes Delhi’s age-old bakeries special isn’t just longevity, it’s loyalty. Regulars who’ve been coming for years still queue up for the same treats. New generations discover them through word of mouth. And despite the city’s obsession with the new and the next, these spots remain delightfully unchanged.

So if you’re craving a slice of nostalgia (with a side of extra cream), here’s a look at Delhi’s favourite old-school bakeries.

Wenger’s

Walking into Wenger’s feels like stepping into a time capsule of the Delhi that once existed, in the memories of our parents and grandparents, and that continues to thrive in their childhoods.

Delhi’s oldest, most-loved bakery! (Credits: @wengersconfectionery)

Established in 1926 by a Swiss couple to cater to British troops stationed in the city, the bakery began as a tea room and confectionery in Kashmere Gate before moving to Connaught Place in the early 1930s, just as the new capital started taking shape around it. Over the decades, Wenger’s today lives on as the oldest surviving food establishment in CP, selling baked goodies, delicious breads, and savoury offerings to locals and tourists alike! Yes, the queues in Wenger’s are still unbeatable, and the Swiss rolls continue to hold the accord of the best in all of the city.

Its reputation today, of course, rests on a wide range of baked goods and confectionery items that taste just as good today as they did a century ago. People from all across India come by for classics like rum balls, chicken and vegetable patties, sponge cakes, éclairs, and Swiss rolls, all of which have been part of Wenger’s lineup for decades—yes, it’s an unchanged menu! The bakery also offers a wide variety of pastries, biscuits, chocolates, and puddings, as well as seasonal items and festive goodies, making it a go-to spot for any occasion, quite literally.

Beyond sweets, Wenger’s savoury offerings—particularly the chicken patties and shammi kebabs—are favourites among the crowds, often paired perfectly with a classic cold coffee or a cream bun, if you’re looking for the whole nostalgic bakery experience. Today, it’s more a part of people’s familial traditions than any other spot in all of CP. And the charm of the space? Wenger’s remains iconic precisely because it hasn’t tried to reinvent itself with the times. The smell of freshly baked bread and sugar-frosted pastries, the familiar display cases, and the continuity of taste that make it special are exactly what still draws us in—the idea of constantness, stability, and a look into the past.

If you are yet to stop by CP and pick up a delicious lemon Swiss roll or kebab from Wenger’s, you haven’t quite completed the walk through the heart of Delhi—visit soon!

Defence Bakery

Established in 1962, this Defence Colony institution has been serving up fresh breads, classic cakes, pastries, and savoury bites for over six decades, and has, over the years, built a devoted local following spanning generations. If there’s one spot I had to recommend for vintage charm, the tastiest breads, and a whiff of Delhi’s past, this one would be among the top 10.

Defence Colony’s favourite spot for sweet treats!

What makes Defence Bakery so special to locals is its length and breadth of offerings and unchanged quality. Long known for freshly baked breads—including multigrain, wholewheat and European-style loaves—the bakery also excels in artisan cakes and pastries, fruit tarts, buttery croissants, gooey muffins and classic chocolate eclairs. Beyond sweet treats, Defence Bakery’s savoury snacks and quick bites are also much-loved by visitors. You best believe no one can visit just once! Patrons usually recommend the bakery’s flaky puff pastries, quiches and chicken patties as reliable, delicious options for almost any time of day. Cookies and brownies are also highlights of their lineup, often pairing perfectly with a cup of coffee or kadak chai.

Unlike Wenger’s, Defence Bakery’s reputation isn’t confined to the original Defence Colony location; over the years, it has expanded to other parts of Delhi and the broader NCR, including Panchsheel Enclave, Greater Kailash 2 and Rajouri Garden. Interestingly, it has even inspired a café-style offshoot in Noida under the Alma Bakery banner.

So, whether you’re picking up a loaf of bread for the week, a decadent cake for a celebration, or simply satisfying a sweet craving, this beloved bakery continues to be a cornerstone for the locals!

Maxim’s Bakers & Confectioners

Maxim’s Bakers & Confectioners has been a much-revered fixture of Delhi’s bakery scene since 1969! Locals love their wide range of baked goods, cakes, and nostalgic treats that patrons only once remember gobbling up in their childhoods. Unlike most other spaces that have since adapted to changing times and preferences, Maxim’s has maintained its charm as a classic neighbourhood bakery, which is precisely what keeps people coming (back)!

This one’s popular for all things cake!

Their display cases are layered with a long list of offerings that appeal to both sweet lovers and those in for a savoury bite instead. Among their most talked-about items are chocolate eclair pastries, pineapple pastries and special pineapple pastries layered with cream, all of which have become crowd favourites over the years. They also stock a variety of tea cakes, including vanilla and dry-fruit cakes, as well as seasonal fruit-and-walnut cakes, which are perfect for festive periods.

However, sweet treats at Maxim’s don’t stop at cakes: they’re also popular for baked cheesecake slices, black forest pastries, lemon tarts and butterscotch pastries! And if you, somehow, are not a fan of cakes and pies, they also offer a generous assortment of cookies, brownies and sweet breads for those like yourself! As for savouries, they’re known for mushroom quiche, cheese footlong sandwiches, cheesy bites and chicken patties. The welcoming feel of the space, combined with the fragrance of freshly baked goods, has made Maxim’s a go-to spot for almost anyone visiting the city. After all, there’s only so many spaces left that continue to cater to the Delhi that once was!

Fronbis Biscuit & More by Frontier

Frontier traces its roots back to 1921 in pre-partition India, when it was founded by Sh. Mangal Sain Sethi and Munshi Ram Sethi in Hoti Mardan. Established initially as a small biscuit unit, the business built its reputation on handcrafted biscuits and traditional baking methods that emphasised quality over scale, which is a philosophy that still defines the brand.

In 1947, as the family behind the bakery migrated to Delhi, they rebuilt it from scratch and by the early 1950s, they re-established the business in Old Delhi, eventually setting up what would become the iconic Frontier outlet. During this time, Frontier positioned itself not just as a biscuit seller but also as a premium mithai-and-snack destination, when packaged bakery culture in Delhi was still nascent.

Today, their flagship is tucked into the bustling lanes of West Delhi’s food circuit, and it still feels like a legacy bakery, a time capsule lined with tins of nostalgia. And as far as the most popular items on the menu are concerned? Regulars swear by the classic atta biscuits, jeera biscuits, and the incomparably crumbly nankhatai—yes, it’s Indian cookie heaven, quite literally. The dry cakes and traditional rusks are also staples, especially among those who grew up with Frontier’s signature offerings.

You best believe if it’s your first time visiting, you’re not leaving with just one box!

Ye Old Bakery

Located within the elegant corridors of The Claridges in Lutyens’ Delhi, Ye Old Bakery has been the city’s answer to those looking for the charm of a vintage patisserie. Established in 1983, the bakery grew out of the hotel’s much-loved dessert programme during the 1982 Asian Games, when its European-style sweets found instant favour with visiting guests. Over the decades, it has retained this regal, slightly Victorian café aesthetic, which is exactly what gets people coming for more.

What’s cemented their cult status is the legendary Corn Pudding: a deceptively simple dessert of sponge, custard, cream and corn that still sees massive daily demand and loyal customers. The equally beloved Bitter Chocolate Cake remains another signature, often spotted at Delhi’s birthday tables and familial gatherings. Other favourites on the menu include the bakery’s house-tiramisu, chocolate mousse, and classic pastries—all reminiscent of its European character and charm.

And so, in a city full of spectacularly beautiful new patisseries, Ye Old’s appeal most definitely lies in the lack of change in its taste and vintage nostalgia. Generations of Delhiites keep returning, forks ready, for a slice of life, a slice of past, or that dangerously delicious slice of corn pudding.
